Baby goat Monty giving Annie, our Jack Russell, a hard time—this was the first butt he ever tried

Maggie, Lucy the goat, and the llamas come calling at the Barnhouse—the llamas make great lawn mowers, though they do tend to nibble the Forsythia
  Galen with Heidi—our enormous guardian dogs are ferocious with predators, but very loving with people and other dogs

We love to make Midsummer Pickles with baby vegetables from the garden Tomatoes ripen while strings of Leather Britches dry on the Barnhouse porch—found only in the Smokies, Leather Britches are green beans threaded on strings and dried, then simmered in the winter for a hearty meal In the fall we gather wild grapes from our mountainside to make intensely wonderful jelly
  The men take a straying peacock home to our neighbors  
Sometimes you have to lasso sheep for shearing Baby Dumpling gives a mighty sunrise crow Donnie shows off a giant potato he dug in the garden—part of 28 bushels last year!
Maggie checks out the barnyard on a misty September afternoon For the pioneers, a wedding just couldn’t happen without an Apple Stack Cake, with each layer contributed by a different family; it’s still one of the Southern Highlander’s most cherished labor-of-love desserts The cats love to hang out in the herb garden, especially by the catnip
Joe Montana and Jamie the lamb have a close encounter—it’s remarkable how all the animals get along   Lizbeth takes a turn at lambsitting
