The Most Beautiful Mine in North Carolina

Join us at our gem mine in the wildflower meadow.  At the mine shaft, dig a bucket of dirt rich in gems.  Take it to the flume by the creek and pour some of the dirt into a gem screen.  Wash away the dirt while you look out at our Randall Glen mountain, then sort through the gravel that’s left. Pick out the gems, some as big as your fist:  rubies and sapphires, emeralds and amethysts…citrine and smoky topaz, rose quartz, green and purple fluorite, milky quartz, red and yellow quartz, and lots of garnets too.  There’s nothing like the excitement of mining your own treasures.

Gem Mining--A Smoky Mountain Tradition Top

The Great Smoky Mountains are filled with gems, and gem mining is a tradition that’s fun for every age. Kids love digging their own gem dirt, parents and grandparents love finding big gems that can be cut for fine jewelry. At the Randall Glen Mine the setting is gorgeous, and the mining is easy.

Lacey and A Giant Rose Quartz
At The Flume

We’re the closest mine to Asheville. Our gem dirt is rich in gems, and you’re likely to find every kind of stone that’s mined in the Great Smoky Mountains. We provide all the equipment you need, free of charge. Our friendly staff will help you mine—we’ll even do the digging if you like—and we’ll identify your finds for you. You keep every gem you find, large or small!

We have special buckets extra rich in sapphires, rubies, and other gems, and we have “Gem Dirt to Go” if you’d like to take some along for mining at home. And if you’d like to mine with your very own equipment, we have personal gem screens and shovels for purchase. We even have miner’s helmets for kids!

Digging for Treasure

Make it an all day visit! Top

There’s so much to do at Randall Glen, we invite you to bring a picnic and stay all day. Besides gem mining, we have mountain trail rides on horseback and beautiful hiking trails. Our farm animals always welcome visitors, too. We have sheep and goats, ducks, chickens and geese—even llamas!—and in the spring and summer we’re filled with baby animals. We have a great landscaped picnic ground with games to play, and a covered wagon for imaginary pioneer journeys. At the Barnhouse center there are gifts and T-shirts, Gem Mining gift sets, soft drinks and snacks. And we’ll bet you never have seen a more beautiful country setting.
